Janitors Win Travel Time and Meal Break Lawsuit

Cleaning company ordered to pay $425,000 in missing travel time and other time and wage violations

Capital Building Services Group, based in Illinois, provided the contract janitors for several department stores in Minneapolis, MN. The stores confirmed that the group won the contracts because they could provide the lowest labor costs.

The class action lawsuit won by eight of the group's janitors cites several practices gaining more attention by the Department of Labor:

  • requiring cleaners to purchase/provide cleaning supplies - with no reimbursement from the company
  • not paying for drive time
  • deducting for meal breaks when the janitors were actually working
  • failure to pay overtime
  • failure to provide pay stubs

In addition, the lawsuit calls out client companies like the department stores this group serviced for benefiting from low-wage contracts rather than paying employees of their own company to perform the same services.
