Too many people think of cleaning as an isolated event, leaving it until the weekend, when lots of family activities are planned, or after work, when their energy is zapped. Our first tip is to clean a little every day instead of saving it all for one point in time. By doing one task every day, you spread the work out and break it down into manageable pieces.
Want to save on your cleaning supplies? Dee Strickland, owner of a Zing Zap Cleaning Service in Minneola, FL suggests buying concentrated cleaning products from your local janitorial supplier. “Most ready to use cleaning products are more than 85% water. Why would you want to pay for that?”
Once you have your cleaning supplies, you need a to get them organized. “Staying organized is key,” says Leslie Power of Leslie’s Cleaning Service in Auburn, CA. Many ARCSI members prefer an apron with lots of pockets so everything they need – cleaning solutions, microfiber cloths, pumice stones, etc. – is handy when they need it. Other members prefer a caddy that they move from room to room with them. Whichever organizational method you choose, it is sure to be more efficient than running to that cabinet under your kitchen sink every 2-minutes to switch out products.
Now that you have your supplies organized, you need a system. Many professional home cleaners use the top-to-bottom, back-to-front, right-to-left system. This allows them to ensure that every inch of a room is cleaned and eliminates cleaning something twice or forgetting to clean it at all. This system saves the professionals a lot of time. “If you don’t have a system, you can wander around your home, missing some areas completely,” says Noriko Carnes, owner of Noriko’s Cleaning Service in Colorado Springs, CO.
