Medical experts at MUSC and Coastal Fertility Specialists (CFS) have teamed up in a groundbreaking study which will show the link between toxins in typical household products and a woman’s fertility.
Dr. John Schnorr of CFS began working with Dr. Lewis Guillette at MUSC on this 2-year study, following more than 300 female patients and collecting data on the chemicals present in their homes and daily routines as well as fluid samples from around the eggs of each of the participating patients.
A toxin is any chemical substance – liquid, solid, or gas – that isn’t supposed to be eaten, drunk, absorbed through skin or breathed in through the mouth or nose. In essence, a toxin is a poison, often introduced into the human system in small doses over a long period of time.
The toxins Drs. Schnorr and Guillette are focusing on in the study are the ones homeowners, particularly women of child-bearing age, use frequently and include
- Cleansing products: soaps (hard and liquid), shampoo, shaving cream
- Conditioning products: face cream, hand lotion, hand sanitizer
- Beauty products: all forms of makeup, hair styling product, nail polish…as well as the removing creams and liquids
- Cleaning sprays, liquids and abrasives
- Air fresheners and scented candles
- Even the additives in the foods we eat every day!
