Beat the heat with this “summer heat employee manual”

We are having another record breaking summer for temperatures. As a good employer, you need to think about what this means for your employees.

1. Air Conditioning

Many of our clients have programmable thermostats that turn up the temperature during the day when they are not home. This is very wise of them, but it can create a real problem for our employees. If you send reminder messages to your clients, remind them to keep the AC turned on when your cleaning crews are at their home. Also, if you allow your teams to change the temperature, create a system and train your teams to turn the thermostat back to how they found it before they leave. One handy tip is to give the team Post-it® notes. If they adjust the temperature of the house, they put a Post-it® on the door where they will be exiting. As they leave, the note will remind them to change the temperature back.

2. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

Keeping your employees hydrated is key to keeping them happy and healthy. It is easy for them to forget. Provide bottled water or buy an inexpensive filtration unit and refillable bottles from the Dollar Store, then customize them for your cleaners. Send them out the door every day with plenty of water to drink.

3. Uniforms

Consider adjustments to your uniform policy. Here at My Maid Service, we allow our cleaners to wear shorts during the summer months. We also switch from collared shirts to t-shirts. The cleaners find them far more comfortable when the weather is hot. While I love the look of our collared shirts, the happiness and long term retention of our employees is worth far more than a fancy looking uniform shirt. This decision has paid dividends many times over.

These may seem like little things, but they show your employees that you care. Having the proper policies and procedures in place ensures that summer operations run as smoothly as possible for everyone.

To be a leader in your company, you also have to assign responsibility and delegate tasks to your team. For a FREE VIDEO PREVIEW of the class “Leadership: Responsibility & Delegation” click the play button on the image below.
