Avoid those pesky summer skips, cancels, and reschedules with these 3 easy tips.
It is summer. That means it is summer vacation time! Yeah! Oh wait. I did not mean your vacation. I’m sorry, I meant your clients are going on vacation. Which means skips, cancels, and reschedules, oh my. Nothing can suck the joy out of summer as quickly as summer skips. It is a tremendous amount of work for us. We have to rework the entire schedule, and all for privilege of making less money too. But it doesn’t need to be that bad. Below are a few tips for dealing with summer vacations.

1. Come home to a clean house!
Avoid skips by making it a selling point. When talking to most people, I find they frantically clean their home before they leave on vacation. They tell me nothing ruins their vacation more than coming home to a house that is trashed. Use this insight. Promote this summer for your clients not to skip a cleaning during their vacations. “Let us clean for you so you can come home to a perfectly clean house and avoid all that stress.”
2. Plan ahead
Do not wait for your clients to tell you about their vacations at the last minute. You know they are coming, so ask early! Email all your clients at the start of the summer season and ask them right then when they plan to be out of town. Sure, not everyone will know. But if even half of your clients tell you their plans for the summer, it cuts your last minute schedule changes in half. Same thing with major holidays. If they are scheduled on Memorial Day, Labor Day, or the 4th of July, email well in advance and ask them not to reschedule at the last minute.
3. Offer additional services
Consider offering additional summer services such as watering the plants and bringing in the mail. This can help keep your vacationing clients on the schedule. If they are taking the family car on a trip, you might offer sweeping out the garage. Cleaning out the fridge is another good vacation upsell. One cleaning service owner I know even offers to shop and restock groceries for her clients. That way they come home to a clean house and something to feed the kids. This is genius, because some of their perishable grocery items such as milk, eggs, or coffee creamer may pass their expiration dates while the family is out of town. The clients can re-enter their work week without worrying about running to the supermarket at midnight to buy milk and cereal.
