Just “being there” and “being available” isn’t enough to be a manager who gets intended outcomes; engaging your support network sincerely gains you far more:

  • Create a discipline: schedule in small conversations and get into the habit of making that happen.
  • Bring value: be sure to balance both your strong listening skills and your expression of expectations and goals. Your support team needs to see that you can do both well.
  • Take the “question-a-week” challenge: have one question each week that you ask of everyone.
  • Track it: record what you learn and look for connections in overall outcomes.
