NY Cleaners Unionize and Get Fired

150 subcontracting office cleaners lost their contract after starting to organize with a workers union.
After nearly 150 contract office cleaners with Commercial Business Maintenance applied for membership with the Service Employees International Union, CBM terminated its contracts for the cleaners. The cleaners applied for union membership to secure a living wage; they had been making $10/hr as subcontractors and stand to earn $18-$24 as unionized employees.

At least one former recipient of the cleaners’ services, co-working startup WeWork, has taken the opportunity to hire direct 70 employees as cleaners.
